3 Ways to a Better Bath

Reinvent the bathroom with quick and easy tips to eliminate clutter

Your day begins in the bathroom, but overstuffed medicine cabinets and drawers don't always start things off on the right foot. Try three creative ideas for maximizing storage space and saying goodbye to clutter for good.

1) Extend your reach

Extend the countertop over the toilet. "It's called a banjo," says Debbie Wiener, principal designer of Designing Solutions in Silver Spring, Md. The counter curves in as it extends over the tank, mimicking the musical instrument's shape, and providing a six- to eight-inch deep surface to hold decorative jars or boxes.

2) Hidden treasures

Tap into the hidden space behind the walls - try to install a recessed medicine cabinet for extra storage. There are plenty of readymade versions, but Wiener suggests springing for a custom-made cabinet to take advantage of all the available space over the sink. Another option: Build recessed shelves into the walls or even the shower tile.

3) Musical chairs

Steal furniture from other rooms. "It helps you organize," says Geeta Kewalramani, owner of Kimaya Designs in Milton, Ontario. She suggests bringing in a chest of drawers to keep your make-up, hair products and jewelry in check. But you can get creative with a small armoire or even a bookcase. Just combine them with baskets or decorative containers.
