Dream in Color

A simple paint job makes any bedroom picture perfect

If the most sleep-inducing part of your bedroom is the boredom-inspiring dcor, it may be time for an update. However, time and money aren't always on hand, so try making one change for a refreshing new look.

"One of the cheapest ways to give your bedroom a whole new look is paint, and if you can do it yourself, you're going to save a lot of money," says Elizabeth Lonseth of Elizabeth Lonseth Interiors in Seattle.

"You might want to go neutral with sage or tan or black. It gives you the freedom to update as necessary with slipcovers, pillows, something giving you a splash of color." Lonseth also suggests painting one wall with a more vibrant color for a trendy and easily transformable color palette.

As kids go through one stage to another, they often want their bedroom to do the same. But keeping up with the latest cartoon or hobby can be time-consuming and expensive. When you do decide to transition your child's room into that next phase, make it a family affair.

"We're going to enlist the kids' help and make it feel a little older, re-organize toys and books," says Kirsten Floyd, owner of Kirsten Floyd Interiors in Hartford, Conn., and mother of two boys. "If you enlist the help of your child it will be a much more rewarding process."
