40 and Fabulous

Crafting timeless, aisle-worthy beauty techniques

Forty is the new 20. You’re secure in who you are and whom you love – and you’re ready to outshine every generation on your walk down the aisle. Today’s beauty experts weigh in on how to look your best at every age. To help you look your best, cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Frederic Brandt, Facelogic Spa founder Sherryl Ford and makeup master Philip Luque of Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics offer tips to put your best face forward – because age ain’t nothing but a number!

Even the Score

When Ford treats brides-to-be in their 40s, she looks to combat deep wrinkles, even out skin tone and create a youthful glow. “Elasticity starts to break down and you need to do something to boost collagen production,” she says. The best bet to regain the glow of your 20s? “Peel treatments like glycolic, lactic or brightening kojic acid combined with repairing mask treatments restore aging skin,” says Ford. And if looking for an over-the-counter fix, she recommends products with licorice extracts to blend discoloration.

To iron away those wrinkles instantly, Botox and fillers are the weapons of choice for Brandt. “Botox relaxes the expression lines in the face and neck muscles that cause sagging,” he says. “Fillers create a support structure that lift and re-drape skin.” For non-needle routes that achieve similar results, Ford stays above the skin, with anti-aging chemical peels.

Made Up, Not Over-the-Top

On the big day, opt for a makeup artist who can do the same with the touch of a brush. “Keep the foundation as light as possible, using more only on the areas that need it,” says Luque. Forget the big-glamour look. “Brides in their 40s should focus creating a natural look,” he adds. Minimal eyes – go light on the eyeliner – with classic red lips creates a look with no expiration date. Luque’s No. 1 piece of advice for brides over 40: If having your makeup done, “Always get a consultation prior to the big day to make sure your artist won’t over do it.”

And if do-it-yourself is more your style, “Have your makeup done in-store and then buy the products to recreate the look,” he says. You might be full of wisdom, but everyone needs a refresher course on creating a fresh face.
