The Rocking 20s

A little prevention is worth a ton of beauty for your fresh face

No one knows when cupid will shoot that arrow. But when he does, today’s beauty experts are there to get brides of any age up to speed. Over the next few weeks, cosmetic dermatologist Dr. Frederic Brandt, Facelogic Spa founder Sherryl Ford and makeup master Philip Luque of Youngblood Mineral Cosmetics offer tips to put your best face forward – whatever your age.

Prevention Pays

With youth on your side, prevention prevails when you’re in your 20s.

“Too much partying and lounging in the sun reeks havoc on your skin,” says Ford. The results: premature aging, dehydrated skin and frequent breakouts. Ford looks to celebrities to support her cause.

“Tan is not the hot look,” she says. “Check out beauties like Uma Thurman and Nicole Kidman. They have beautiful, porcelain, non-sun-damaged skin.”

Her solution: Banish all sun worshipping. “By using SPF protection daily, focusing on diet and exercise and sticking to a good skin-care routine, people in their 20s can offset early aging.” Adding monthly facials to your at home regimen amps up your daily defense.

Dr. Brandt agrees: “Prevention is important. Wear sunscreen everyday and use antioxidant creams to fight free-radical damage.” For those prone to breakouts: “Women with oily T-zones should opt for Retin-A, but use Renova on the drier areas,” he says. Combining the two keeps skin smooth and controls breakouts.

Keep Makeup Modest

Once you’ve secured the skin-care routine, it’s time to bring out the best for the day of beauty.

“When it comes to your makeup, keep the look clean and fresh,” says Luque. “Young women tend to favor trendy looks but for a wedding, choose classic to avoid any ‘what was I thinking’ afterthoughts.”

The most common offense of this age group: Overdone makeup, especially foundation. “In your 20s, you don’t need much unless prone to acne or other skin problems,” says Luque. “Just use as little as possible and spot treat the problem areas with a good concealer.” For the best big-day glow: “Sleep well the night before, drink lots of water and apply a hydrating, soothing mask on the morning of to get that burst of moisture into the skin,” adds Luque.

With your entire future in front of you, choose the most successful path for your skin – prevention. Armed with sunscreen and self-tanner, sail from your rocking 20s into your respectable 30s with a confident, cared-for complexion that will keep most people guessing when you graduated.
