Registry Revitalization

This isn’t your mother’s wedding, so make sure your registry is full of your style

In addition to selecting a dress and reception site, part of wedding planning includes picking silver patterns and plate settings. But the latest trend in wedding registry adds a twist to this traditional task. Forget about just flagging the flatware, today’s brides and grooms get the green light to have a little fun.

A time-honored custom, the gift registry allows guests to give gifts that both the bride and groom have already selected. “The gifts help couples furnish their home, mark the joyous occasion of their marriage, and are symbols of the givers’ affection,” according to editors of “Bride’s Book of Etiquette.” Between all the big-name home and department stores, registering for the basics is no problem, but how can couples break free from uniformity and decorate a home as unique as they are?

Supplement in Style

For Sarah Tallman, owner and mastermind behind the home-décor shop The Grove in New York City, it’s about registering for items that you wouldn’t typically think of registering for. Stick to big-name stores for the basics and head to a boutique for the extras. “The style of my store is fun, and it’s filled with items you want to treat yourself to.”

Targeting soon-to-be brides and grooms as her main audience Tallman keeps it light. “From cashmere throws, to pillows made from Hermes vintage scarves, or Lucite serving trays to one of a kind silver salad tongs, it’s these final touches that will give your place instant warmth and make it a home.”

Put Some Hue In You

Nothing adds personality quicker than pigment. And for Tallman, bursts of color like bright leather placemats in orange adorned with nail studding along the outer edges or a set of coral bookends add a decorative punch throughout a new apartment or home. And like the traditional go-to stores for bridal registry, niche boutiques can keep it simple for guests with prices typically ranging from $50 to $500; some also offer an online registry.

By adding a boutique or a less than traditional store to your list of sources, couples create unique gift registries that reflect their personality. It also allows guests to buy a gift that they know is special to the couple and adds a bit more meaning to what can be a routine ritual. Mix trendy with tradition and give sentiment an instant upgrade.
