Hair to Flatter

Oval, long square, heart round – when planning the perfect locks for the wedding, first consider the shape of your face

When selecting their wedding-day hairstyle, brides should apply the same philosophy they use in buying their perfect bridal gown: Make sure to pick something that suits the shape of one’s figure and face. Curvier brides like strapless gowns that slenderize silhouettes. Similarly, a bride with a round face should stay away from ringlets that end at her chin. Instead, she should opt for a style that elongates her face, like a do that’s worn down. Cascading tendrils can soften the look of those with square jaw lines. Oblong faces need a little more width so brides can opt for buns, or ponytails wrapped around themselves, and extra hairpieces, such as a tiara. For brides with heart-shaped faces – wider at the eye, temple and cheek area, with a narrow chin – create some width with a chignon, a tight knot at the base of the head for a sophisticated look.

Those blessed with symmetry in the form of an oval face can wear most hairstyles, says Shelly Young, a hairstylist in Maui, Hawaii, who specializes in weddings. “It’s the perfect shape that works with anything, but your hair will always depend on your dress,” she says.

Young says hairstyles should complement the bride’s gown, not compete with it. Let the tone of the wedding dictate the bride’s style. Dramatic updos work well with princess ball gowns. Destination weddings, where brides may tie the knot on the sun-kissed shores of Waikiki, call for hair worn in loose curls, matching the relaxed vibe of a silky slip dress. And, no-frills gowns pair up nicely with hair that is slicked back or worn in a sleek blow-out.

Whatever the hair choice for a bride, hopefully, she’ll make it with a professional’s input. Bring those dog-eared magazines to a hairstylist to see if he or she agrees with your selections or has other alternatives. Bear in mind, those celebrity hairstyles you see online or in in the mags do look lovely, but they may not be a match for you. Stay true to yourself and let those stylists work their magic with lotions, potions, pins and sprays to give you that perfect look.
