Harry Potter and the Wedding Conundrum

A July 21 wedding date collides with the release of the popular book series – is it cause for concern?

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

In the year of 07-07-07, there’s another July date that’s bound to put wedding-bound folks in a flux: July 21. Why? That Saturday is when “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” (Arthur A. Levine Books), the seventh and final installment in the fanatically popular series, hits bookshelves. For all the altar-bound that day – brides, grooms, guests – that means very limited reading, if any. For those dying to know what will become of the boy wizard, that one day of bliss may be a day full of anxiety.

Chicago teacher Lauren Estlund even put her wedding by the wayside when thinking about the upcoming J.K. Rowling novel.

“I was talking to (fiancé) Chris and I said, ‘So, on July 21, we will have to spend the day reading.’ And he said, ‘Uh, we’re getting married that day.’ I said, ‘Oh yeah, I forgot!’”

If Harry Potter isn't your concern, keep your personal style in mind when deciding your wedding date, too. If you want a classic summer wedding, go for it. If the rebirth of the earth seems like the right time to celebrate your new life, opt for a springtime wedding. Or if you’ve always been drawn toward the end-of-the-year holidays, celebrate with a winter wedding bash.

The time of year might not seem peripheral to the location or décor of your wedding, but year in, year out, whether it’s the flowers blooming, leaves changing color or snow falling to the ground, the one thing you’ll remember is your wedding season. Harry Potter or no Harry Potter.
